Welcome to my blog...

Welcome and thanks for popping by my new Digital Songwriter Blog.

As you may know, the Digital Songwriter is a new workshop series being sponsored by ASCAP and a new column in ASCAP's Playback Magazine.

It's my sincere hope that i can help alleviate any fear or hesitation preventing anyone from creating and recording their own music with today's technology.

I welcome your questions and there are no stupid questions, so please feel free to ask anything.

I will be posting the Playback Magazine articles here as I write them - and you may note that these blog versions have more screenshots and more information than what was printed.

Again, please post any questions or comments here.

Thanks all,

Gina

Hello, Gina,
I signed up on esessions (but haven't utilized it yet :) ), still have a lot of learning to do.
I do have a question, if I may. Can you use the apple Garageband midi virtual instruments in ProTools? Since I have almost all of their instruments, I would hate to have to save and rebuy a bunch of virtual instruments. If this is covered in your book, I apologize, I am only on Ch. 5.
Take care and thank you for your blog!

Hey Dennis,

Unfortunately, you can't use the built in Garage Band instruments with Pro Tools. Pro Tools comes with Structure Free and Xpand and I heard today that the new Pro Tools 8 is going to be coming with some other new Virtual Instruments.

Which plug-ins have you bought? Are you sure the third party plug-ins you purchased don't have an RTAS version?

Garage Band uses a plug-in format called AU and Pro Tools LE uses a format called RTAS. It's been rumored for years that Pro Tools will someday read AU and VST plug-in formats but not yet. Many Virtual Instruments though come in all three formats and you can use them between applications like Guitar Rig...

You can export your Garage Band tracks into Pro Tools so you could hypothetically do your songwriting in Garage Band and export those Midi tracks as audio files into Pro Tools. If you want to know how to do that, let me know.

Good luck!

Gina

Sorry about that...

Thank you, Gina, Well all my instruments were from the Apple Instruments/loop series. I may have one plugin from elsewhere. I have been using GB for two years, and never really dreamed that I would be moving up! And back then I never knew what VST or AU was, I just wanted a "Trombone" sound!
Figures, they are coming out with 8, when I just bought 7.4. It would be nice to see more instruments.
You know, actually I have a lot of songs written with GB, it would be great to know how to work with them in PT!
Thank you!
Dennis

Dear Gina

Thank you, thank you :)

To make a "really" long story short, I was using Garageband while writting my material for my first debut CD. I migrated to ProTools LE and I was STUCK!, my creativity was stifled, I was not having fun..

Then I stumbled upon your book and it was your book that enabled me to understand, learn and grow with using protools from that point forward.

My debut CD was released this year, and has enabled my music to be accepted in libraries etc. If you have a minute visit my site at http://www.gilvelazquez.com

Please I am not bragging, but this production was done all by myself and using what I have learned from your book. Thank you Gina

Dennis,

Did I forget about telling you how to export tracks from GB to Pro Tools?? I'm thinking I might have spaced writing this for you....

If so, i'm so sorry and just email me and remind me to do this and I will post instructions here. gfs@eSession.com

Sorry again if I forgot. I've been traveling quite a bit these days.

All the best,

Gina

Thank you for replying so quickly. I actually just upgraded to ProTools LE 8 (what a change). In addition, I recently joined Taxi.com and I am getting some feedback on some of my new tracks and the issue of recording came up as a reason to decline them. I "think" it may be the sonic quality for lack of a better word (mixing or levels not sure yet). If I get some more specific feedback from them, could I forward it over to you and maybe you could offer some general comments on what I might be doing wrong?

I really appreciated your enthusiasm in my music, and if I can offer a testimonial or something pertaining to your book don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks again

Gil,

We built this feature into eSession which is called Mentor Request - and it allows you to search the database for famous producers and engineers and then attach a song or song(s) and get their professional opinions.

If I were you, I would find a talent member like Kevin Killen or Dave Way who are professional engineers and get their opinion. I am more of a songwriter and less of a mixing engineer which is what I think would be the best kind of advice for you.

I hope this helps. But, I will say, quality recordings on any software whether Pro Tools or Garage Band begin with your Microphone and Mic Pre. I would invest in a decent mic and pre to record with. If you're recorded tracks sound great, it's easy to mix and get a better sonic quality - but if you're using a low quality mic through the 1/8" inputs on your computer.... there's not much you can do with tracks recorded that way...

Again - hope this helps.

Yell if you need help using eSession or email support@esession.com

Warmest regards,

Gina
